A Large Benign Mixed Tumor of the Soft Palate

Abstract
Aside from the major salivary glands, the mixed tumor occurs more frequently in the palate. Although many cases of mixed tumor have been reported in the literature through the years, there are still many such cases which are mismanaged by clinicians. The authors report a case of a large benign mixed tumor, occuring in the soft palate of a 28 year-old Korean woman. A review of literature related to this case is presented.
It is generally known that the benign mixed tumor of the palate has more tendency to become malignant than one occuring in the major salivary glands, and the larger the tumor the greater are the chances of recurrence. Therefore, the benign mixed tumor of the palate must be excised before it becomes too large.
The patient in this case was diagnosed as a tonsillar malignancy at another hospital and referred to the Department of Otolaryngology of Presbyterian Hospital, Taegu, Korea for X-ray therapy. A diagnosis of benign mixed tumor was made by fronzen section and her post-operative course after the removal of the tumor has been satisfactory.
